Intimacy has been a fascinatingly engaging topic of interest for me, both personally and professionally.
On my discovery journey, I found myself diving in farther and farther into not only the definition of the word, but the meaning behind it, the behaviors it brings out, and the experiences it brings forth.
Let's take a look at Google's definition.
Intimacy in a relationship is a feeling of being close, and emotionally connected and supported. It means being able to share a whole range of thoughts, feelings and experiences that we have as human beings.
Now, let's take a look at societies definition.
Intimacy in a relationship is about being sexual. This definition is much shorter than Google's.
Why is this?!
See, intimacy has always been looked at by society as something you could only share with a special someone because it happened behind closed doors, in a bedroom, versus out in the open in front of the public eye.
Now! This is where history gets interesting. Over time and throughout history, we have (sometimes unknowingly) re-enforced specific thoughts and ideas around the word intimacy, just as one would do with any other word.
The point being, people put meaning behind words every day, as is in our nature. The issue, challenge and problem begins when people misinterpret or make up meanings in order to justify certain behavior. As long as this incorrect meaning or justification of behavior is reinforced, the new meaning, will persist and take over. Hence, intimacy meaning sex in today's world versus precious, vulnerable time shared in strength with one another.
Here are four simple questions to ask one's self before movement forward in intimacy (and remember, it's not always easy, but it is always very simple):
When I think of the intimate moments in my life, what do I think of?
When I think of the intimate moments in my life, who do I think of?
What do I like about this person or people?
What about their behavior makes me feel safe?
Your Mission:
Attract the tribe you know you deserve, and begin setting a new tone of intimacy within society. Help others discover their strength through vulnerability as you have.
I love you.
